Batad Rice Terraces From Manila: The DIY Guide That Beats a Tour Package

Ohayami overnight bus MNL → Banaue (₱720), jeepney from Banaue town to the Batad Saddle (₱200/person or ₱2,500 charter), trek down 20 minutes into the amphitheater village. Total ~12 hours of travel one way. Worth every one.

Banaue vs Batad — they're not the same view

The famous amphitheater-shaped rice terraces that appear on the ₱1,000 bill? Those are in Batad, not Banaue town. Banaue has its own viewpoints (the ones you can drive to), but Batad is where you have to walk in. The walk is the point.

The DIY route, step by step

  1. Book Ohayami Trans bus, Sampaloc Manila → Banaue. Overnight, ~9 hours, ₱720 one way (reserve at least 3 days ahead; weekends sell out).
  2. Arrive Banaue 5 a.m. Breakfast at Las Vegas Lodge or 7th Heaven Café (both open early).
  3. Register at the Banaue Tourism Office (₱50 environmental fee). Take a tricycle/van to the Batad Saddle (₱200/person shared, ₱2,500 charter van).
  4. Trek 20 minutes downhill from the saddle into Batad village. Concrete steps, manageable with a light daypack.
  5. Stay 1 night minimum at Rita's Mt. View Inn or Hillside Inn (₱600–₱1,200/night, basic but clean, hot water sometimes).

What to do once you're in

Day 1 afternoon: Viewpoint walk

A 15-minute uphill walk from the village center takes you to the classic amphitheater viewpoint (the one every photo shows). Stay until sunset if the weather holds.

Day 2 morning: Tappiya Falls hike

A 1.5-hour trek through the terraces proper and out the other side to Tappiya Falls. Swimmable pool at the base (cold, 15°C range, refreshing after the hike). Guide is ₱500–₱800 for your group — take one, the trail is unmarked in sections.

What to pack for a 2-night Batad trip

  • Trail shoes or hiking sandals; rubber flip-flops fail on the stone steps
  • Fleece or light jacket — Batad at 1,500m is ~15°C at night
  • Headlamp (power cuts are routine)
  • Cash — ATMs don't exist in Batad; nearest is Banaue town
  • Small backpack only; you carry everything down the steps yourself

Frequently asked questions

Is Batad reachable by car all the way in?

No. Vehicles stop at the Batad Saddle. The last 20 minutes to the village is on foot — concrete steps, but steps. If you have mobility concerns, Banaue's Main Viewpoint is more accessible.

How fit do I need to be for Tappiya Falls?

Moderate. It's 3 hours round-trip with continuous up-and-down on stone steps. Not technical, but you'll feel your quads the next day. Bring 2L of water.

Can I do Sagada on the same trip?

Yes. Banaue → Sagada is a 3-hour jeepney ride via Bontoc. Common 4-day combo: 2 nights Batad, 2 nights Sagada, bus back via Baguio.

What's the best month for photography?

April–May (just planted, vibrant green) or late June (maturing yellow). Harvest in July can be dramatic. Avoid November–January — terraces are dormant brown.

Do the guesthouses take credit cards?

No. Everything in Batad is cash. Withdraw at Banaue before you head up.
