The route from Manila

Direct flights to Camiguin exist (Mambajao Airport, code CGM) but are limited and expensive. The cheaper standard route: MNL → CGY, bus to Balingoan port (2 hours, ₱250), ferry to Benoni port Camiguin (1 hour, ₱250). Total: about 5 hours including buffers.

Day 1 — Arrival loop

  1. Katibawasan Falls (₱30 entrance) — 70m single-drop falls. Bring swimwear; the pool is 10m deep and cold.
  2. Ardent Hot Springs (₱100 entrance) — volcano-heated pools. Evening is the play; the temperature contrast with the night air is the point.
  3. Old Bonbon Church ruins (free) — 1871 Spanish colonial church, destroyed in 1871 Mt. Vulcan eruption. Atmospheric at sunset.
  4. Dinner at Checkpoint Restaurant (near Mambajao) — chicken curanderos and tuna jaw, locals' pick.

Day 2 — White Island and Sunken Cemetery

Set alarms for 4:30 a.m. Boatmen at Agoho (close to most hotels) start ferrying by 5 a.m. The round-trip to White Island — a pure-white sandbar that appears at low tide — is ₱650 for the boat (split 4 ways = ₱165 each). Go at sunrise; by 9 a.m. the day-trippers flood it.

After breakfast, snorkel trip to the Sunken Cemetery. A giant cross marks the spot where an old cemetery sank during the 1871 eruption. It's a genuinely eerie underwater site; corals have colonized the ruins and groupers patrol between the tombstones. ₱500/person for a 1-hour snorkel trip from Catarman.

Food & where to stay

  • Camiguin Volcano Houses — dome-shaped bungalows near Agoho, ₱2,500/night
  • Bintana sa Paraiso — cliffside hotel near Mambajao, ₱3,800/night
  • Nypa Style Resort — budget beachfront, ₱1,400/night
  • Enigmata Treehouse — quirky artist-run place; stay here for the conversation, not the luxury

Frequently asked questions

Is Camiguin Island volcano active?

Mt. Hibok-Hibok is classified active but dormant. Last major eruption was 1951. PHIVOLCS monitors it continuously; tourist activity is never threatened under current Alert Level 0.

How do you get to Camiguin from Cebu?

No direct ferry currently. Fly Cebu → CGY and take the land+ferry combo, or fly via Mactan → Cagayan de Oro with a connection.

Is White Island actually just sand?

Yes. A pure-white sandbar with zero shade, vegetation, or facilities. Bring an umbrella, sunscreen, and water. The sand is blindingly bright.

Can I rent a motorbike without a license?

Many rental shops don't ask. Legally you need a license. Ride defensively; the coastal road has blind curves and few traffic controls.

Is 2 days enough for Camiguin?

Yes for the highlights. Add a 3rd day if you want to include Mantigue Island or a proper Hibok-Hibok hike.
